I was recently commissioned to create a bespoke hand woven wool shawl for a gift for a very deserving recipient.
I had previously begun to weave a cowl drawing on the inspiration of winter woodland berries, and the client requested that the colours and design of the shawl be the same as the cowl.
I was given a very short time frame to complete the commission due to the clients personal situation.
The shawl was woven using hand spun and hand dyed yarns, and also, ethically sourced yarns, such as boucle yarns bought on the Isle of Skye. To create the pattern I used alternating strands of warp and weft yarns, and added saori style weaving along the weft at random intervals as I felt intuitively drawn to doing.
The weave was created using weft floats, to give the shawl a variegated texture to the surface of the cloth.
